Drusilla Shay, but most people either call me “Dru” or “Shay.”
My mission is to inspire people to be greater, stronger, happier, and more well-equipped versions of themselves through my content and personal interactions with people.
Harlem, New York
Can you explain the motivation behind your brand Drusilla Shay? What you plan to achieve?
I named my brand after my name because my content is a reflection of who I am and what I have to share with the world. My motivation is to be a blessing to others by helping, teaching, and inspiring, whether it’s through hair and fashion tips or informative vlogs.
What is your biggest accomplishment or proudest moment pertaining to your brand?
My biggest accomplishment pertaining to my brand is staying consistent with my YouTube video posts last year and this year. Some people find it more difficult to do the work to reach a goal, but for me, the hard part is being consistent. It feels weird calling it “my” accomplishment though because it’s the support of my family and friends that carried me to this accomplishment. Fortunately, those closest to me push me to keep going and offer their help every step of the way.
Walk me through a typical day in your shoes.
On a typical weekday, I snooze my alarm about 5 times on average before getting out of bed because I love my sleep (but I rarely get enough of it!). During the day, I work at an advertising agency. On my way home, I’m usually brainstorming new content or ironing out the kinks of what I have to film for the week. In the evenings, I’m either cooking, cleaning, filming, editing, or doing all of the above! On weekends, I’m normally juggling filming and church activities.
How do you fit in time for yourself? When can you fit in "me" time, and what do you like to do?
To be honest, I don’t have a lot of time for myself. It’s usually my family that is pushing me to take a rest! However, most times that I get to really wind down land on Sunday evenings. I love it because it’s a nice day and time to de-stress before the start of a new week. In order to have “me” time, I actually have to make time (making sure all my responsibilities are done by a certain day/time so I can chill). “Me” time usually consists of a skincare routine (usually involving a face mask), eating cereal, and watching lots of tv. Personally, there’s nothing more relaxing than laying down and watching something entertaining that gets my mind off of daily responsibilities.
I haven't always been the most confident in my height. I was bullied and suffered with self-confidence. Have you always been confident? What advice would you tell another tall girl that isn't so confident?
I can definitely relate to this. For most of my life, I did not appreciate my height because others didn’t—I allowed my value to be determined by what others thought of me, which is unhealthy. I was certainly not always as confident as I am now! I would say my 20s is when I began to slowly embrace who I am and who I am becoming, but I am still a work in progress.
The advice I would give to another tall girl who isn’t so confident is to remind themselves that every single part of who you are was divinely made by God, who does not make mistakes! You have to remember that every single feature of yours combined is what makes you different and uniquely you. You have to appreciate being different. When I was younger, I used to love the idea of being like everyone else—but as I got older, I realized that wanting to be or look like someone else chipped away at my authenticity. What even makes you special if you’re just like everyone else? People remember you more when you stand out. You make more of an impact when you stand out! If you have to, take some private time and write down everything about yourself that makes you insecure—then, think about and write down how or why these very things are a benefit. Honestly, confidence comes with mindset, so when you start looking at things with more of a positive outlook, you’ll realize that how you see yourself will also change for the better.
With our options being slim, what are some quick style and/or shopping tips you can provide for tall women?
My shopping tips for tall girls is to explore stores/companies that have tall sections or that cater to tall women as a whole. You are better off finding more options online than looking for long items in the store. Another tip is to subscribe to my YouTube channel for even more tips lol
How do you feel about the clothing industry from the perspective of a tall woman? What specific changes would you like to see within that industry?
When it comes to the clothing industry, it frustrates me that clothing is showcased on tall models during fashion shows, but finding tall clothing in the store is few and far between. It’s a bit unfair that tall people get used to display the clothes, but are not catered to as much in stores. I understand that we are not the “average” or “common” customer, but if that’s the case, use models that represent the “average” or “common” consumer.
Along with this, I see a lot of brands aiming to be more inclusive of different body types, but sometimes, they simply stop at adding plus size sections. There are so many more body types out there, and if a brand is trying to be more inclusive of that, then the taller body types should also be a part of that conversation.
